This shift, outlined by VP Megan Kacholia, emphasizes the use of Google’s internal AI tools like Cider, which includes proprietary models such as “Gemini for Google.” The move aims to enhance productivity while safeguarding sensitive information, reflecting Google’s strategic priority in the competitive AI landscape. CEO Sundar Pichai underscored the importance of AI in a July meeting, highlighting its role in staying ahead of rivals like OpenAI. Following the May launch of Cider, engagement surged with 50% of users accessing the platform weekly. The company’s commitment to AI is further demonstrated by its recent $2.4 billion acquisition of AI startup Windsurf to enhance coding capabilities. Despite discussions around AI usage impacting performance reviews, a spokesperson clarified it is not a formal evaluation criterion. Currently, AI contributes to over 30% of Google’s code, boosting engineering productivity by 10%.
