Google Innovates in Silence: Developing Smart Glasses Amidst Gemini AI Promotions

Google is discreetly reviving its smart glasses project, as CEO Sundar Pichai hints at exciting advancements. While the augmented reality (AR) glasses design remains in flux, the company is focusing on its Gemini AI user base, positioning smartphones as the primary platform for now. During the second-quarter earnings call, Pichai expressed enthusiasm over improved user experiences in smart glasses compared to earlier versions, though he acknowledged that smartphones will dominate consumer experiences for the next 2-3 years.

Pichai’s more cautious tone contrasts with earlier exuberance showcased at the I/O developer conference. Google’s Pixel phone, with over 12 million annual shipments, contributes less revenue than its search and cloud services but plays a critical role in growing Gemini app usage. Set for a potential 2026 launch, the smart glasses will include advanced features like a lens display, eye tracking, and integration with Android apps, emphasizing user fashion preferences. Collaboration with companies like Samsung and talent from Meta and Apple highlights Google’s commitment to innovation in this emerging category.
