Google Introduces AppFunctions: Bridging AI Agents and Android Apps

Google has launched early beta features to transition Android into an “agent-first” operating system, focusing on a task-centric approach. Key to this transformation is AppFunctions, a Jetpack API that allows developers to expose app capabilities for seamless integration with AI agents, enhancing user experience and privacy by facilitating on-device interactions. This structure allows users to request tasks, like retrieving photos from Samsung Gallery via the Gemini Assistant, with actions persisting for future reference.

To address potential app integration gaps, Google has introduced a UI automation platform in Android, enabling complex tasks like group pizza orders or rideshare coordination without additional developer input. This system ensures developers can reach users effortlessly, requiring minimal coding.

Privacy is paramount, with all actions executed on-device, ensuring user oversight and control over sensitive operations. Currently available on the Galaxy S26 series, AppFunctions and the automation platform are set for broader release in Android 17.
