Google Introduces Gemini AI in Android Auto, Phasing Out Google Assistant

Google is rolling out its new Gemini AI assistant to select Android Auto users, transitioning from the traditional Google Assistant to a more sophisticated conversational AI. This update, previously announced by CEO Sundar Pichai, is currently available to beta testers on Android Auto versions 15.6 and 15.7 via a server-side update. Early reports suggest that Gemini is operational in vehicles paired with compatible devices like the Pixel 10 Pro XL. Designed to enhance user experience, Gemini offers smoother voice commands, better app integration, and real-time text translation while driving. Users can activate it with “Hey Google” and access a new “Live” mode with “let’s talk live.” A dedicated “Gemini” section in Android Auto settings allows management of features like “Interrupt Live Responses” and “Share Precise Location.” However, minor limitations exist, such as the inability to recognize contact nicknames. Gemini aims to eventually supplant Google Assistant across various platforms.
