Google is enhancing its AI capabilities with the introduction of “Ask Maps,” powered by the Google Gemini AI model. This innovative feature allows users to ask complex, real-world questions and receive tailored responses in Google Maps, addressing previous limitations in handling specific queries. For instance, users can engage in a conversational format to seek recommendations for places, such as a vegetarian restaurant between their office and a friend’s location, complete with ambiance and table availability.
In addition to enhancing user interactions, Google Gemini is revamping the visual aspects of Maps with a new “Immersive Navigation” mode that includes updated map colors and detailed 3D visuals. This feature rollout is expected on Android and iOS in the U.S. and India, with desktop access coming soon. Privacy remains a priority, as Gemini’s responses rely solely on Google Maps data. While monetization plans for businesses weren’t disclosed, the current system does not favor paid placements in recommendations.
