Google is enhancing its Photos app with a feature called “How was this made,” which aims to clarify if photos or videos have been edited using AI. This new section will allow users to view details about edits, leveraging Content Credentials to track a media’s edit history, both with AI and non-AI tools. As AI-generated content proliferates, the need for authenticity tools becomes vital. Users will be able to see labels such as “Edited with AI tools” or “Media captured with a camera,” depending on the editing methods employed. If any modification occurs or the history is absent, an error message will be displayed. This feature, discovered in Google Photos version 7.41, reflects ongoing efforts to address the growing challenges of synthetic media identification, ensuring transparency and authenticity in digital content representation. It’s important to note that while these features are gleaned from code analysis, they may not necessarily be included in the official release.
