Google has firmly denied allegations that Gmail uses personal emails and attachments to train its Gemini AI model. According to spokesperson Jenny Thomson, these claims are misleading, stating, “We do not use your Gmail content for training our Gemini AI model.” The confusion arose from a Malwarebytes report suggesting that Google analyzes private emails to enhance features like Smart Compose and Smart Reply. Historically, Gmail smart features such as spellcheck and predictive text have operated independently of personal content. Google has implemented toggles for users to manage these features in Workspace, which could lead to misunderstandings if users mistakenly opt-in to data usage settings. While Google asserts that smart features analyze content locally to personalize user experiences, this is distinct from using correspondence for Gemini training. Recently, a class action lawsuit was filed against Google over alleged unauthorized tracking of communications, signaling ongoing concerns about privacy and consent.
