Google has utilized thousands of YouTube videos to train its advanced AI models, Gemini and Veo 3, without most creators’ knowledge. Veo 3, revealed at the recent I/O developer conference, can generate high-quality videos with sound and dialogue. Although Google claims to respect creator rights and has established measures to help protect their content, it does not allow creators to opt out of having their videos used for AI training, unlike platforms like Amazon or Nvidia. YouTube’s Terms of Service grant the platform extensive rights, stating that creators permit YouTube to utilize their content for various improvements, including AI applications. Independent creators have expressed concern that their work is being used to develop AI models that could potentially compete with them, raising issues of credit and compensation. Meanwhile, companies like Disney and Comcast are filing lawsuits against AI generators like Midjourney for copyright infringement related to character reproduction.
