Google has requested a postponement on sharing data with competitors, including OpenAI, as it contests a ruling confirming its monopoly in online search. District Judge Amit Mehta previously determined that Google’s tactics to maintain dominance through exclusive contracts—ensuring its search engine was the default option—were unlawful. Google is appealing this decision, arguing that the requirement to share data threatens its trade secrets and fails to recognize user preference for its services. The company stated that the ruling overlooked the rapid innovation and competition from both established firms and startups. Google clarified it is not seeking delays on other orders, such as those related to user data privacy and security. The ongoing case, initiated in 2020 during the Trump administration, also sees the Justice Department’s attempts to force Google to sell its Chrome browser being rejected. A trial in spring 2025 aims to address competition opportunities in online search further.
