The Google Translate app, launched in 2006, has evolved into an essential tool for international travelers, translating an impressive trillion words monthly. Although it faces some accuracy issues and has been the source of numerous translation blunders, a new experimental feature aims to enhance user understanding. Currently tested on Android, an “Understand” button, powered by Gemini AI, reveals the app’s translation process, offering context and clarity. It highlights common translations and suggests further queries through an “Ask” button, aiding language learners. While these innovations mark a shift towards educational value, the iOS version has yet to receive these features. Google plans to offer Duolingo-like “language practice sessions” for users, particularly English speakers learning Spanish. With a focus on fostering confidence in language use, these updates position Google Translate as a more comprehensive language tool. Whether it can rival Duolingo’s in-depth courses remains uncertain but promising for future developments.
