Google Unveils Environmental Impact of Gemini Apps in New Paper on AI’s Energy Consumption

Google LLC has released data regarding the environmental footprint of its Gemini AI applications, revealing that a median text prompt consumes 0.24 watt-hours of energy, equivalent to powering an efficient lightbulb for over a minute. This energy usage is primarily attributed to Google’s TPU processors, which account for 58% of the total energy consumed per prompt. The latest TPU chip significantly enhances energy efficiency and is deployed in large server clusters consuming nearly 10 megawatts of electricity. The environmental impact of a typical Gemini query results in emissions of 0.03 grams of CO2 and requires 0.26 milliliters of water. Over the last year, Google has achieved a 33x reduction in energy consumption and a 44x decrease in carbon footprint per prompt. Comparatively, Gemini’s footprint is similar to that of ChatGPT. This research underscores Google’s commitment to sustainability in AI technology.
