Google Unveils Gemini CLI: A Free, Open-Source AI Tool for Developers

Google has introduced Gemini CLI, an agentic AI tool designed for developers to access Gemini AI capabilities directly within their terminals. This tool facilitates requests for debugging, code generation, and command execution using natural language. According to a Google blog post, Gemini CLI not only excels in coding but also serves various functions, including content generation and task management. It leverages the Gemini 2.5 Pro model for coding tasks, while also allowing connections to other models like Imagen and Veo for image and video generation. Gemini CLI integrates with Gemini Code Assist and supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The tool is freely available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, with users required to sign up for a free Gemini Code Assist license, enabling 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 per day. For those needing to work with multiple agents or custom models, usage-based access is available through Vertex AI or AI Studio.
