Google Unveils Veo 3 AI Video Tool in South Africa as Part of Global Launch Amidst Content Concerns

South Africans can now access Google’s advanced AI video generator, Veo 3, through the Vids app linked to Gmail, following its global launch in over 159 countries. Introduced at Google I/O 2025, Veo 3 enables users to create polished video clips up to eight seconds long. While Veo 2 remains free and faster, it doesn’t offer the same quality as Veo 3, which currently operates in preview mode under Google’s AI Pro subscription—limiting users to generating only a few clips daily unless they upgrade. The launch has raised concerns, particularly after social media platforms like TikTok were inundated with racist and offensive AI-generated videos featuring harmful stereotypes and Veo’s watermark. This backlash echoes previous issues faced by Google, which withdrew its AI image generator under similar scrutiny last year. As questions arise about the responsible use of generative AI, transparency and moderation strategies for Veo 3 remain unaddressed by Google.
