Google will gradually roll out its Gemini AI tool to all users in Hong Kong, with a mobile app to follow. Previously, the city ranked alongside mainland China as a region where tech firms hesitated to launch AI chatbots. Despite limited direct access, some residents have used third-party applications and VPNs to utilize foreign AI tools. Gemini, introduced to paid business users in 2024, is a multimodal platform enabling interaction across text, images, and audio. Michael Yue, Google Hong Kong’s managing director, emphasized the tool’s potential to enhance creativity and productivity in the region. Notably, Google faced challenges under the 2020 national security law and National Anthem Ordinance, leading to the removal of pro-democracy content. The integration of Google’s Gemini models with Apple Intelligence is anticipated this year, signifying a major step in building a comprehensive AI ecosystem that fosters innovation in Hong Kong.
