Google is set to enhance flood forecasting with its AI tool, Groundsource, powered by Gemini, providing up to 24-hour advance alerts for urban flash floods. Revealed on March 12, this tool integrates urban flood predictions into the existing Flood Hub, which currently focuses on riverine floods. The AI system overcomes traditional forecasting challenges by analyzing a blend of historical river data and real-time news reports, enabling localized predictions even in ungauged areas. Groundsource leverages advanced machine learning techniques, including recurrent neural networks (RNN) with long short-term memory (LSTM), to assess meteorological and geographic factors, optimizing predictions for densely populated urban regions. This initiative aligns with broader global trends, as various nations increasingly aim to utilize AI for natural disaster management. Groundsource is part of Google’s Crisis Resilience effort, emphasizing the importance of innovative tech in mitigating climate impacts, particularly in urban environments prone to flooding.
