Google’s Jules Joins Developer Toolchains as Competition Intensifies in AI Coding Assistants

Google has enhanced its AI coding agent, Jules, with a new command-line interface (CLI) and public API, enabling deeper integration into developer workflows. Previously accessible only via the web and GitHub, Jules Tools allows developers to perform coding tasks directly in their terminal, streamlining processes and reducing the need to switch between interfaces. This innovation aligns with Google’s goals to facilitate AI-assisted coding as competition in software development intensifies.

Jules, which operates on the Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model, differs from Google’s Gemini CLI by focusing on scoped tasks, executing plans with minimal interaction. The newly launched API supports integration into IDEs like VS Code and aims to enhance usability. Additionally, Jules has introduced a “memory” feature to track user interactions, while exploring alternatives to GitHub for code hosting. Enhanced user oversight ensures that any issues encountered prompt user intervention. Available under tiered pricing plans, Jules offers both free and premium options for developers.
