Harnessing AI for Authoring and Reviewing at Agents4Science: A New Frontier

Artificial intelligence (AI) agents are transforming the landscape of scientific research, evolving from mere tools to co-scientists. Traditionally, researchers posed specific questions, such as predicting protein structures, utilizing AI tools like AlphaFold. Recently, AI has expanded its role, engaging in various scientific activities including hypothesis generation, experimental design, and even paper writing. This shift is driven by advancements in AI agents, which utilize large language models (LLMs) capable of accessing databases and navigating scientific literature. Early successes include AI co-scientists designing nanobodies and formulating validated hypotheses, although the field remains in its infancy. Key questions persist about the creative potential of AI scientists and the optimal collaboration between human researchers and AI. Constraints exist, as journals and conferences often exclude AI co-authors and LLM reviewers, complicating the exploration of AI’s contribution to scientific inquiry. As this field develops, understanding these dynamics will be crucial for future advancements.
