Harnessing AI to Empower Neurodiverse and International Teams

University staff are overwhelmed with larger class sizes and heavier administrative loads, which disproportionately affects international colleagues and those with disabilities, particularly neurodiverse individuals. This results in a persistent cognitive overload that hinders innovation and exacerbates career inequalities. Ethical and transparent use of artificial intelligence (AI) can alleviate this “energy tax,” enabling more efficient task completion while maintaining academic integrity. However, fear of stigma and unclear institutional guidance deter many staff from utilizing AI effectively.

Common challenges faced by neurodiverse and international staff include excessive cognitive load, language barriers, and perfectionism. To promote an inclusive environment, institutions should normalize AI as an accessibility tool through safe discussion forums, clear guidelines, and privacy-compliant tools. Training sessions on specific tasks can also enhance AI usage. Ultimately, embracing AI framed as an accessibility aid can empower staff and improve communication, benefiting both the workforce and students while fostering equity in academia.
