Harnessing Cognitive Capital: Utilizing AI for Reflective Essay Writing Insights

LLMs (Large Language Models) can be utilized as cognitive mirrors that enhance human thinking rather than replace it. By positioning LLMs as meta-cognitive assessors, they help identify cognitive friction points, such as biases, analysis paralysis, and areas of cognitive overload in writing. This approach promotes coherent flow and enhances semantic understanding. A study indicated that participants who first wrote independently and then used an LLM experienced increased neural activity and cognitive engagement. To facilitate this, the tool COGILO was developed as a Google Docs add-on, which analyzes writing and identifies key cognitive patterns like Analysis Paralysis and Information Overload. It suggests post-hoc rewrites to refine texts, emphasizing clarity and depth of thought. By reclaiming cognitive agency, Cogilo aims to help users become more nuanced thinkers, reinforcing the belief that AI should reflect and augment human intelligence. Cogilo is currently available for free on the Google Workspace Marketplace.
