Harvard Library is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the searchability and usability of its vast collections. Led by Stuart Snydman, the library is developing tools like Collections Explorer, which employs semantic search for more intuitive natural language queries versus traditional keyword searches. Early testing has involved over 150 students to refine usability. A key initiative aims to link AI chat platforms like ChatGPT directly to Harvard’s materials, ensuring reliable academic resources are accessible. While the AI projects are still in development, they promise innovations such as automatic transcription of handwritten documents. Snydman emphasizes that the library’s mission remains unchanged: to connect scholars with trustworthy information and preserve historical materials. As Harvard continues to lead in digital preservation and AI-enhanced access, Snydman views these advancements as critical to adapting while maintaining core values in the academic landscape.
