A groundbreaking AI model is enhancing the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), one of the deadliest diseases globally. In Mali, a mother visited a health center and, after an X-ray, the AI algorithm confirmed her TB diagnosis almost instantly—significantly faster than traditional lab methods that can take weeks. The model analyzes X-ray images to detect TB, allowing health workers to provide same-day results and collect sputum samples for confirmation.
Over 80 low- and middle-income countries are adopting this AI technology, which experts describe as “revolutionary.” While AI offers rapid and economical screening, concerns exist about regulations, accuracy over time, and environmental impacts from data centers. However, advocates argue that AI can meet urgent health needs in underserved communities, potentially transforming healthcare access. With proper infrastructure and regulations, AI holds promise for improving global health outcomes.
