Health NZ (HNZ) has issued a warning to staff in the Rotorua Lakes district regarding the unauthorized use of AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for drafting clinical notes. The memo highlights serious concerns over data security, privacy, and accountability. Staff are explicitly prohibited from using free AI tools for clinical purposes, and doing so could lead to disciplinary action. HNZ’s AI policy mandates that only registered tools are used, including the approved AI scribe, Heidi, being implemented in emergency departments. Fleur Fitzsimons, national secretary for the Public Service Association, noted that clinicians are turning to AI due to immense work pressure and criticized HNZ’s approach. She emphasized the need for investment in proper training and solutions rather than threats of disciplinary action, urging HNZ to address the root causes of staff improvisation with unapproved tools. Effective communication and support are essential for maintaining a secure healthcare environment.
