Helsinki Leverages AI to Predict E-Scooter Crashes Ahead of Time

admin

Helsinki has initiated a pilot project to evaluate e-scooters equipped with AI-powered sensors that monitor rider behavior and identify safety risks in real-time. Supported by the EU, the trial features 40 shared e-scooters from Tier-Dott, integrating sensors from UK-based See.Sense to detect sudden braking and swerving. Data from the sensors is analyzed by French startup Vianova’s mobility data platform. Coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki, the project aims to enhance e-scooter safety, particularly amid rising scrutiny in Europe due to increased injuries and fatalities linked to micromobility. In 2023, Germany reported 9,425 e-scooter accidents, prompting cities like Paris and Oslo to implement stricter regulations. The project shifts focus from solely rider behavior to infrastructure quality, aiming to address underlying accident causes. Results will contribute to broader EU research on safe transport and potentially influence future regulations, marking Helsinki as a key player in the evolving micromobility landscape.
