Electronic waste, often from outdated devices, poses a significant environmental challenge. Millions of functional gadgets are abandoned as they fall behind modern software demands, contributing to the global e-waste crisis—projected to soar to 82 million tonnes by 2030. Google’s A2UI (Agent to User Interface) protocol offers a solution by transforming legacy hardware into interactive AI portals. Through an open-source framework, A2UI utilizes cloud-based processing to enhance device performance without demanding heavy local computation. Interfaces are generated using structured data (JSON), allowing older devices, like tablets, to serve as responsive AI assistants while enhancing accessibility and sustainability. This “UI as data” model ensures security by keeping execution boundaries intact. With A2UI, developers can create dynamic, task-driven experiences, extending the life of existing technologies and reducing electronic waste. The project aligns with sustainable practices, enabling a more circular economy in tech by maximizing the utility of existing materials.
