Hollywood Studios Launch Copyright Lawsuit Against AI Image Generator

Recent legal action has emerged in the creative industries, with major studios such as Disney and NBCUniversal suing AI company Midjourney over copyright infringement. The studios claim that Midjourney not only enables users to create images featuring copyrighted characters but also actively promotes this infringement through its “Explore” section. They argue that the company is aware of its infringement due to its curation practices and has the technical means to prevent copyright violations, yet chooses not to implement such measures. Prior to the lawsuit, Disney and NBCUniversal attempted to negotiate with Midjourney to address these concerns, unlike other AI platforms that agreed to enforce protective measures. NBCUniversal’s general counsel emphasized the need for legal action to safeguard artists’ creative investments. This lawsuit represents a new phase in Hollywood’s ongoing battle against AI, shifting from protecting individual rights to challenging tech companies over intellectual property rights. Other major studios have not yet joined the lawsuit.
