Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation has introduced two AI-powered systems for efficient train deployment and crowd control at the Kai Tak Sports Park. These innovations—the ridership prediction model and intelligent crowd diversion system—were developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Utilizing extensive datasets from government surveys and historical passenger data, the ridership prediction model estimates passenger distribution across the rail network, allowing MTR to anticipate travel patterns following major events. According to Chan Hing-keung, MTR’s chief of operations, the system enhances coordination with the operations team to adjust train frequency effectively. Initially launched in July 2024, these AI tools have already demonstrated their effectiveness by managing passenger dispersal during recent events, ensuring smoother operations and enhanced crowd management. With plans to expand their applications, MTR aims to continuously improve public transit experiences in Hong Kong.
