Honolulu Joins Cities Pioneering AI in Urban Planning and Permitting

Honolulu has introduced a new AI technology tool, CivCheck, to enhance the efficiency of the planning and permitting process for residential building permits. This software aids applicants by ensuring compliance with local regulations and helping to gather necessary documentation before submission, significantly reducing review times and minimizing errors. Since its launch on December 8, CivCheck has improved the prescreening process from a six-month wait to just seven days for about 174 projects. This tool is designed to assist, not replace, human plan reviewers by organizing information and highlighting relevant code sections. CivCheck represents a shift towards operational AI in public sectors, with cities like Louisville also piloting similar technologies to expedite the permitting cycle. The goal is to streamline processes, reduce frustrations, and ultimately lead to better-quality applications and faster permit approvals, benefiting both residents and businesses in the community.
