Beware of Malicious Apps: Tips for Safe Downloads
As mobile app usage surges, so too does the risk of downloading fake apps fueled by artificial intelligence (AI). A recent report by DoubleVerify indicates that by 2025, fake apps could triple on Apple and sextuple on Android. These deceptive apps often mimic legitimate ones and may compromise your personal data and device performance.
Gilit Saporta of DoubleVerify warns that malware may manifest as overheating, device slowdowns, or unexplained battery drain. Malicious apps may even change their icons, making them difficult to identify.
To protect yourself, carefully vet apps before download: avoid links in texts or social media, scrutinize reviews (watch for AI-generated patterns), verify the app’s publisher, and check app longevity and user base. While Apple and Android strive to eliminate these threats, proactive caution is essential. Report any suspicious apps to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Stay safe and informed on app security!
