A recent study presented at the 2025 USENIX Security Symposium reveals significant privacy concerns surrounding AI browsers like ChatGPT for Google, Sider, and Microsoft Copilot. Researchers simulated real-world browsing scenarios, including accessing sensitive content such as news, tax documents, and even pornography. They discovered that these AI extensions frequently recorded sensitive user information, including medical diagnoses, social security numbers, and even banking details. Notably, some browsers transmitted personal data to external servers and shared user prompts with third-party trackers like Google Analytics, enabling cross-site tracking of IP addresses. While Perplexity stood out as the most private option, lacking the ability to recall previous interactions and minimizing data access, it still analyzed page titles and locations. This research emphasizes the need for enhanced privacy safeguards in AI browsers, as many existing extensions compromise user confidentiality by leveraging detailed profiling based on user activity, age, and interests.
