How One Malicious Document Could Expose Confidential Data Through ChatGPT

The latest generative AI models, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, can connect to personal data systems, such as Gmail, GitHub, and Microsoft Calendar, to deliver tailored responses. However, this integration raises security concerns. Research presented at the Black Hat conference by security experts Michael Bargury and Tamir Ishay Sharbat revealed a vulnerability in OpenAI’s Connectors, allowing sensitive data extraction from Google Drive through an indirect prompt injection attack known as AgentFlayer. The attack can extract critical developer secrets, including API keys, without any action required from the user, emphasizing the risks associated with sharing data across AI platforms. OpenAI has taken steps to mitigate this threat, though concerns remain about the potential for malicious exploitation. As emphasized by Google Workspace’s Andy Wen, enhancing protections against prompt injection attacks is essential for maintaining security in AI applications. This incident underscores the importance of proactive security measures in generative AI integrations.
