Hugging Face Raises Alarm Over Closed-Source Robots Endangering User Autonomy

Share

Hugging Face raises concerns about the future of robotics, warning against the dangers of closed-source, corporate-controlled systems. CEO Clément Delangue emphasizes the importance of open-source robotics for better user control and understanding. In response, Hugging Face has developed Reachy Mini, a fully open-source desktop robot aimed at developers, educators, and hobbyists. Standing 28 cm tall and weighing 1.5 kg, this modular robot can be assembled from a kit and programmed in Python, with plans to support JavaScript and Scratch soon.

There are two versions available: the Lite model ($299) operates via a wired connection and requires an external computer, while the wireless version ($449) includes advanced features like a Raspberry Pi 5, Wi-Fi, a battery, and additional sensors. The Reachy Mini features a wide-angle camera, motorized movements, and over 15 behavior modules, encouraging users to innovate and share their functionalities, furthering Hugging Face’s open-source robotics initiative.
