Doctors at the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad have developed an innovative AI tool that utilizes smartphone cameras to effectively detect glaucoma, achieving an impressive efficiency rate of 92%. Glaucoma, often dubbed the ‘sneak thief of sight’, can lead to vision loss before symptoms appear, making early detection vital. The study, published in PLOS, involved screening 213 patients using a portable, non-mydriatic fundus camera. The AI tool showcased remarkable accuracy, with a sensitivity of 91.36% and specificity of 94.12%, aligning closely with specialist diagnoses. Among high-risk groups, such as diabetics, it identified 42 out of 45 definite glaucoma cases. For patients over 65, the tool reported a 90.57% sensitivity and a perfect specificity of 100%. With glaucoma prevalence significantly higher in African and Asian populations, Telangana has opened its first dedicated glaucoma center at a public health center in Nalgonda, paving the way for expanded services statewide.
