Hyderabad Doctors Create AI-Powered Smartphone Tool Achieving 92% Accuracy in Glaucoma Detection

Hyderabad’s LV Prasad Eye Institute has created an innovative AI-powered smartphone tool capable of detecting glaucoma with over 92% accuracy, including 86.9% for early-stage cases. This low-cost, offline device is set to transform early diagnosis, especially in rural and underserved communities. Published in PLOS One, the study involved 213 participants, primarily from high-risk groups, demonstrating a sensitivity of 90.57% in patients aged 65 and older. The AI tool effectively identified 42 out of 45 glaucoma cases among patients with diabetes, showcasing its potential in screening those with comorbid conditions. This portable technology does not require internet access, making it ideal for resource-limited settings. The researchers highlighted that this AI integration can significantly enhance glaucoma screening efforts, presenting a viable solution to a pressing global health challenge. This breakthrough positions the tool as a vital asset in addressing glaucoma, offering hope to millions at risk.
