I Posed 500 Questions to ChatGPT: Discover the Ads That Appeared Most Frequently

OpenAI has begun integrating ads into the free version of ChatGPT, prompting users to encounter promotional content about every fifth question. During testing, ads were closely aligned with the topic of user inquiries, ranging from travel to productivity tools. For example, an inquiry about the gig economy yielded an Uber ad, while a question about Harvard versus Stanford featured an MBA program advertisement. OpenAI’s spokesperson clarified that the ad rollout is gradual and intentional, designed to maintain user trust. Although the initiative raises concerns—especially because CEO Sam Altman previously expressed dislike for ads in AI—OpenAI insists that ad placements won’t compromise the chatbot’s content integrity. The move aims to enhance accessibility for users while evolving OpenAI’s long-term business strategy. Since February 2023, OpenAI has been experimenting with these ad placements, marking a potential shift in how free services are monetized while planning for more enhancements in the future.
