The recent IBM report highlights a looming crisis in cybersecurity due to Shadow AI, costing organizations an estimated $670,000 on average per breach. With unauthorized use of AI tools, breaches can climb to $4.63 million, significantly higher than the global average. The study found a substantial gap in AI governance: 63% of breached organizations lacked adequate access controls and governance policies. Compromised supply chains were identified as a primary attack vector, involved in 30% of incidents. Notably, weaponized AI is proliferating, with attackers increasingly utilizing AI for phishing and deepfake attacks. While only 32% of organizations employ AI extensively for security, those that do save approximately $1.9 million per breach and resolve incidents 80 days faster. The disparity is stark, particularly in the U.S., where average breach costs have surged to $10.22 million. Effective AI governance is essential for organizations to thrive amid evolving threats.
