Illinois Leads the Way in AI Regulation
In a bold step towards ethical mental health care, Illinois has become the first state to implement regulations on the use of AI in therapeutic practices. The newly passed Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act restricts AI’s role in mental health by ensuring that:
- Only licensed professionals can provide therapeutic services.
- AI is barred from making independent therapeutic decisions or creating treatment plans.
- Violators may face fines of up to $10,000 per infraction.
This move addresses critical concerns about AI’s impact on vulnerable individuals seeking help. As Rep. Bob Morgan states, “We are taking action to pause the unchecked expansion of AI in mental healthcare.”
