In the Face of ChatGPT’s Surge, CEO Sundar Pichai Recalls Sergey Brin and Google Engineers Pushing Through Challenges

In late 2022, the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT prompted a rapid response from Google, initiating a company-wide “Code Red.” This shift refocused efforts on accelerated AI development, with co-founder Sergey Brin returning to support the cause. By February 2023, Google unveiled Bard, its answer to ChatGPT, although it faced criticism for being an underwhelming release due largely to concerns over AI model “hallucinations”—the generation of misleading information. Following a lackluster performance and challenges in building brand recognition, Google rebranded Bard as Gemini. Throughout this period, Brin and fellow co-founder Larry Page became intricately involved in AI initiatives, participating in hiring and technical reviews. CEO Sundar Pichai noted that Brin’s presence significantly motivated the workforce, highlighting the importance of founder engagement in driving innovation. Brin even starred in a promotional video for “Antigravity,” an advanced AI-based coding tool stemming from Gemini 3, demonstrating Google’s ongoing commitment to AI advancements.
