India Leads the Charge in AI Regulation

India is taking proactive steps to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) with new proposals from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) aimed at curbing the misuse of AI-generated content online. Social media platforms will be required to mandate users declare AI-generated material by using visible watermarks and labels on content constituting over 10% of its duration or size. Non-compliance may lead to loss of safe harbor protections for these platforms. Industry stakeholders have until November 6 to comment on the draft amendments to the IT Rules, reflecting concerns about deepfakes and other synthetic content. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the amendment raises accountability across the board. The initiative follows recommendations from the parliamentary standing committee emphasizing the need for technological frameworks to combat misinformation. Overall, these efforts aim to enhance transparency and trust in digital information while addressing rising AI misuse cases in India.
