India is rapidly becoming a leader in artificial intelligence (AI), with significant growth in coding, data analysis, and complex reasoning tasks. According to OpenAI, India ranks in the top five nations globally for AI usage among ChatGPT Plus users, indicating a shift toward more advanced AI applications. Following the launch of OpenAI’s Codex in February 2026, user adoption soared four-fold within two weeks, highlighting the burgeoning developer ecosystem around AI tools. However, AI access remains uneven, primarily concentrated in major cities like Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, which account for half of AI users despite being less than 10% of the population. Urban centers see a stark increase in data analysis and coding activities compared to rural areas. Nonetheless, AI is gradually extending its practical applications in education and healthcare, suggesting a broader societal impact as it moves beyond technical fields.
