India Sends Official Notice to X Over Alleged Misuse of Grok AI Technology

The Indian government has formally addressed social media platform X regarding the alleged misuse of its AI tool, Grok, raising significant concerns about AI governance and online safety. A report from Mint reveals that senior X executives were summoned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to discuss Grok’s image-editing features, which were flagged for enabling digital shaming and harassment, particularly against political figures. Following a demonstration, regulators remained unconvinced, requiring full compliance with Indian law. Over the next 48 hours, Grok was reportedly used to create non-consensual sexualized images, prompting a surge of complaints. Consequently, MeitY issued a formal notice demanding an “action taken report” detailing safeguards and oversight measures. X defended Grok, stating outputs stem from user prompts, not independent AI actions. Legal experts emphasized the need for clear AI accountability in India, highlighting potential implications for intermediary protections. The situation underscores ongoing regulatory challenges surrounding AI-generated content.
