Individuals Seek Spiritual Guidance Through Chatbots

AI-powered chatbots are transforming spiritual engagement, as highlighted in a recent New York Times article. The increasing popularity of religious apps like Bible Chat, which boasts over 30 million downloads, and Hallow, which reached the top of Apple’s App Store, indicates a shift in how individuals seek spiritual guidance. These chatbots primarily direct users to religious teachings and Scripture, with some, like a site that claims to facilitate conversations with God, aiming to connect users with their faith. Rabbi Jonathan Romain asserts that chatbots could serve as an entry point into spirituality for those unfamiliar with traditional places of worship. However, experts like Professor Heidi Campbell caution that these chatbots often reflect users’ existing beliefs, potentially reinforcing misguided or conspiratorial thoughts. She emphasized that they rely on data patterns rather than genuine spiritual discernment, raising concerns about their role in modern religious contexts.
