Inside the AI Product Development Process at BCG

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is fully committed to developing AI tools, as stated by partner Scott Wilder. Approximately 15 months ago, BCG launched an internal R&D lab to innovate AI technology that supports its consulting services. Wilder emphasized the necessity for all firms to evolve into tech entities post the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, prompting a shift among consulting firms toward AI solutions. BCG innovates on three levels: leveraging proprietary data via data engineers, creating AI tools through consultants for client projects, and developing firm-wide tools like Deckster, Ava, and GENE. A unique “forward-deployed” consultant model harnesses expertise to build reusable tools, driving innovation from the ground up. BCG has established a thorough screening process for new tools, ensuring compliance with data privacy laws. The company’s bottom-up approach fuels AI advancements, enabling about 80% of custom GPTs to originate from frontline insights, effectively aligning BCG with modern product organizations.
