Insikt Group Report: China’s PLA Utilizes Generative AI in Military Intelligence Operations

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is increasingly interested in generative artificial intelligence (AI) for enhancing military intelligence tasks. They have developed systems and tools that leverage generative AI to analyze data, produce intelligence reports, and support decision-making. Although the PLA has recognized potential benefits, such as improved efficiency and speed, it also acknowledges the associated risks, including the potential for biased intelligence and diminished objectivity due to ideologically constrained AI models. The PLA is likely utilizing both foreign and domestic large language models (LLMs) for intelligence purposes. Recent PLA research highlights both the transformative potential of generative AI and the challenges it poses, such as susceptibility to misinformation and limitations in handling complex intelligence tasks.
