Integrating AI in My Community College English Class: A Hit with Students

The increasing fluency of younger generations in AI, highlighted by my 12-year-old twins, emphasizes a growing knowledge gap in education, particularly between privileged students and those from underperforming schools. While my children thrive in an AI-literate environment due to supportive schools and parental guidance, many adult learners struggle to understand these technologies. As a college professor, I realized the urgent need to bridge this gap through responsible AI integration in the classroom. I’ve invested over 150 hours researching AI while implementing tools like ChatGPT and Pangram to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. My courses now leverage AI for personalized learning experiences, fostering metacognition and reflection. The results speak volumes: improved student retention and performance compared to previous semesters. This shift from fear to responsible use of AI is crucial for equipping all students with essential digital literacy skills, ensuring equity in education amid technological advancements.
