Vermillio, a US-based tech platform, has launched a groundbreaking tool capable of tracking the use of copyrighted material by generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This innovative technology generates a “neural fingerprint” of copyrighted works, enabling the estimation of how much pre-existing material influences AI-generated images. Amidst rising concerns about copyright infringement, especially from entities like BBC, creative professionals are demanding compensation for their unconsented work. Vermillio’s tool showcased that Google’s Veo3 and OpenAI’s Sora heavily rely on existing copyrighted content, with AI outputs matching 80% to 87% of its fingerprints. Generative AI models, including those from OpenAI and Google, are trained on extensive data sourced from the open web, raising legality issues over using copyrighted works without permission. Legal challenges persist in the AI sector, with companies like Anthropic settling lawsuits for improper use of creatives’ works.
