Dhanvin Ganeshkumar, a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, VA, developed Swype AI, an innovative accessibility software, to assist individuals with motor impairments, inspired by his grandparents’ difficulties using a computer. Partnering with classmate Zoeb Izzi, they created a customizable platform that utilizes simple gestures and voice commands, making tech interaction easier for users affected by conditions like Parkinson’s and muscular dystrophy. Swype AI was recently awarded $2,500 at the SXSW Student Impact Challenge and beta-tested by around 5,000 users. Despite facing skepticism due to his age, Ganeshkumar credits a mentor at the Center for Accessible Technology for helping them scale their project. With plans to fully launch the app on Apple App Store and Google Play, Ganeshkumar aims to enhance technology accessibility for all. His journey emphasizes the impact young innovators can have on assistive technology for people with disabilities.
