IONOS Expresses Interest in Establishing AI Gigafactory

On June 20, 2025, IONOS Group SE and HOCHTIEF AG submitted an Expression of Interest to the European Commission for building and operating an AI Gigafactory. IONOS, with over 30 years of expertise in digitalization and cloud infrastructure, offers the capability to handle large-scale AI workloads while ensuring digital sovereignty. HOCHTIEF, a leader in data center development, brings extensive experience in planning, financing, and construction. The consortium includes additional technology and security firms, as well as research institutions, to support the initiative. The proposal envisions a state-of-the-art data center starting operations as early as 2027, initially deploying over 50,000 GPUs, scalable to over 100,000, adhering to European standards for resilience and independence. The project will be financed through a mix of equity, partnerships, and debt, supplemented by EU funding. This submission marks the first step, with the European Commission to outline the next phases soon.
