iOS 26 Unveils Personalized AI-Generated Message Backgrounds, Innovative Generative Shortcuts, and Creative ‘Mixmoji’ Features

iOS 26’s Messages app will introduce customizable conversation backgrounds, with AI-generated options based on user descriptions. This feature, utilizing Image Playground, will allow users to personalize backgrounds for each message thread, which will synchronize across all participants in the conversation. In addition to backgrounds, the update will also allow for polling, automatic translation of incoming messages, and a new emoji feature called “Mixmoji,” where users can combine two existing emojis. Other anticipated AI enhancements include an Apple Intelligence-powered version of the Shortcuts app, known as “Generative Shortcuts,” to assist users in creating complex multi-step actions using natural language. These new features will be showcased at Apple’s WWDC 2025, set for June 9. Overall, Apple is enhancing the Messages app to keep pace with competitors like WhatsApp.
