Is ChatGPT Diminishing Our Intelligence?

In the 2008 Atlantic article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr raised concerns about technology diminishing our cognitive abilities. With the emergence of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, this issue has intensified, prompting the question: Is ChatGPT making us stupid? As a professor with two decades of AI experience, I observe how reliance on AI for cognitive tasks may hinder critical thinking and problem-solving skills. While AI delivers quick answers, it may foster intellectual complacency and limit long-term cognitive growth. Users who think critically can leverage AI to enhance their understanding, while others risk becoming overconfident in their knowledge without deeper analysis, illustrating the Dunning-Kruger effect. The challenge lies in using AI not as a replacement for cognitive effort but as a tool for inquiry. Ultimately, the future of work will depend on how we engage with AI—either to augment intelligence or to succumb to dependency.
