BBC Verify’s analysis reveals that dozens of AI-generated videos have falsely portrayed Iran’s military prowess and created misleading clips showing supposed Israeli strike aftermaths. These fabricated videos have garnered over 100 million views across platforms. Conversely, pro-Israeli accounts circulate deceptive clips of protests in Iran, falsely depicting dissent toward the Iranian government.
Analysts note the unprecedented use of generative AI in conflict-related misinformation, with fake content claiming the destruction of advanced military technology like F-35 jets, often traced back to accounts with potential ties to Russian influence operations. Some social media accounts, termed “super-spreaders,” experienced a rapid increase in follower counts due to their disinformation output.
Expert observations suggest that the motivations behind such misinformation range from financial gain to political influence, with the dynamic nature of online sharing exacerbating the problem.
